Saint Sava Feastday Celebration –Today

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved Saint Sava of Serbia. The Divine Liturgy will be immediately followed by the Slava Prayers in the Chapel. Dan and Ann Mamula are the honored Kumovi for the day. Our Sisterhood has prepared the feastday luncheon buffet. Thank you to all who donated desserts.

House Blessings during the Theophany Season

Fr. John invites us all to schedule our Home Blessings with him in the coming weeks before Lent begins (Feb. 27). This is a beautiful time to visit, pray with our priest and “to renew the home as a holy site” (OCA Resource Handbook-Article 260).

Vespers and Orthodoxy 201 – Wednesday, February 1

Our Vespers service begins at 7PM followed by the study of the Gospel of John.

Parents’ Afternoon Out – Saturday, February 4

This Saturday is the first of our monthly Saturday afternoons when parents can bring their babies and children here to church for supervised care, entertainment and food while the parents have time off. They are asked to let Popadija Kitty know if they plan to participate. Childcare volunteers can sign up with Popadija.

SOUPer Bowl Sunday – February 5

Next Sunday is our SOUPer Bowl Sunday. We will have a special collection of food for the needy. All soup, other foods and grocery gift cards will be delivered to our charity partner, SERVE in Stafford, VA for distribution to hungry families.

Orthodox Scout Sunday – Sunday, February 5

The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America and the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting [EOCS] have designated February 5 as Orthodox Scout Sunday. Our children who participate in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be recognized. They may wear their Scout uniforms.

Metropolitan Jonah to speak at annual DC March for Life January 23

Orthodox Christians everywhere - especially those within driving distance of DC - are encouraged to bear witness to their faith at the annual March for Life. As in years past, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah, will speak at the pre-March program beginning at noon on the National Mall. Marchers are to gather under the “Orthodox Christians for Life” banner on the Mall, west of Eighth Street near the Smithsonian Castle. At the end of the March, a Memorial will be celebrated in front of the Supreme Court for the victims of abortion.

Saint Sava Patron Saint Day Celebration – Sunday, January 29

We will soon celebrate our Saint Sava Slava with Divine Liturgy at 10:30AM followed by the Slava Prayers in the Chapel. Our Sisterhood will prepare the buffet luncheon and asks for donated desserts. Plan to join in the commemoration of St. Sava’s legacy of Christian education and the spiritual nurture of children.

Mini Projects Work Day – Saturday, July 16

The first Mini Projects Work Day is set for Saturday, July 16 from 8AM to 2PM. Volunteers can come anytime during that time period to work on various quick and simple tasks. Parents’ Time Out

We at St. Luke are considering starting a monthly parents’ afternoon or evening out on the first Saturday of the month beginning in September. Supervised care, entertainment and food would be provided for children while the parents go out, or stay here, for social time. Please let Fr. Prayers Requested for Christians in Egypt

In the wake of the unprecedented events that have been occurring in Egypt, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah calls upon the hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful of the Orthodox Church in America to pray for peace and stability in Egypt and for the nation's Christian population.

"We pray that, in the midst of tremendous social change, Egypt's Christian population will be able to live and grow in peace and without fear," said Metropolitan Jonah. "Our prayers are with Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria, Coptic Pope Shenouda III, and all Egyptian Christians, that they will be strengthened and guided by the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. May God protect them now and in the critical days to come."

We will have a Vesperal Liturgy this Wednesday at 7PM to celebrate the Meeting of Our Lord in the Temple. Fasting for Holy Communion begins after the midday meal. Please join us in celebrating this beautiful feast of the Church. Scripture readings are Hebrews 7:7-17 and Luke 2:22-40. Other than the fast before the sacrament, Wednesday and Friday this week are fast-free.

Metropolitan Jonah Urges Faithful to Join DC March for Life – Mon., January 24

Orthodox Christians everywhere are being encouraged to bear witness to their faith in person at the annual March for Life on Monday, January 24. • S.E.R.V.E. is participating in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) #14452, the Combined Virginia Campaign (CVC) #6413 and the Local Government Campaign (LGC) #6431.

• S.E.R.V.E. will be adding an additional 50 families from Stafford Dept. of Social Services to our regular list of families for Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets. Last year we prepared 186 food baskets for Thanksgiving. Extra food donations will be greatly appreciated. $10.00 grocery store gift cards are also needed to purchase turkeys. In Memoriam: Archpriest

MCLEAN, VA [OCA] --
Archpriest Milorad Milosevich, retired rector of Saint Luke Church here,
fell asleep in the Lord on the afternoon of June 22, 2010. His health
had been steadily declining for the past several years.

Born in Bosnia in 1931, Father
Milorad studied engineering before having a deep personal experience
of Christ, which led him to pursue theological studies. In seminary
his favorite professor was Father [now Saint] Justin Popovich. In the
late 1950s, he fled Yugoslavia’s political regime, first finding asylum
in Greece and then traveling to the US, where he enrolled at Saint Vladimir’s
Seminary, Crestwood, NY. After his graduation in 1961, he was awarded
a scholarship to study at the World Council of Churches’ graduate
schools in Bossey, Switzerland, and Salonika, Greece.

He married the former Rose
[Ruza] Milasinovic in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood the following
year by His Grace, Bishop Dionisije of the Serbian Orthodox Church at
Holy Trinity Church, Youngstown, OH, after which he was assigned as
the first full-time priest at Saint Luke Mission, McLean, VA. Under
his leadership, the fledgling community purchased a five-acre lot in
1971, on which a church and hall were completed in 1976. In 1981, he
and the parish were received into the Orthodox Church in America.

For 47 years, Father Milorad
lovingly cared for and instructed his parishioners, celebrating with
their joys and helping them to turn to Christ when the sailing got rough,
and always leading by personal example. His focus always was on bringing
his parishioners closer to God through more attentiveness to Scripture,
frequent Communion and Confession, and the pastoral love and care that
he displayed his parishioners and those around him. When not serving
in the altar, he was often found planting trees or doing ground maintenance
on the church property or helping in the church kitchen. He also served
as a Serbo-Croatian language specialist with the US State Department
for 24 years. Declining health caused him to retire from active ministry
in 2009, but he continued to worship at Saint Luke’s with his beloved
parishioners until he was hospitalized a few weeks before his death.

Father Milorad is survived
by his wife, Protinitsa Rose, and by a devoted and supportive extended
family that includes his sister-in-law, nephews and nieces.

His Beatitude, Metropolitan
Jonah will preside at funeral services at Saint Luke Church. The Funeral
Vigil will be celebrated on Friday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m. The Divine
Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, June 26 at 9:00 a.m., followed
by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring MD. A memorial
meal will follow in the parish hall.

• Memorial Day is next weekend. Names may be submitted for Next Sunday’s prayers for those departed who have served in the military.

• Also next Sunday, the Faith in Action Team will accept donations of gift cards to send to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for our Wounded Warriors to enjoy time out with family and friends. Many soldiers returning from war zones have lost limbs and must spend up to 18 months in rehab facilities. We can make their lives a bit better by donating gift cards in $20 amounts to Safeway, Giant, Target, Wal-Mart, Outback, Subway, Red Lobster, Panera or Macaroni Grill.

IOCC Continues U.S. Gulf Coast Rebuilding – May 2 to August 1

The season has come once again when IOCC begins mobilizing volunteer teams to build homes in St. Tammany Parish, LA.
